Changes: Alternatywna Historia Europy (1939)

Alternatywna Historia Europy [1939] is a mapping series by DroneQi. The series focuses on Europe starting in 1939, in a world where Nazi Germany failed their invasion of Poland. The series began on January 3rd, 2020 and is currently on hiatus, with the first season ending on July 7th, 2020. However, a videomapping video which acted as a prequel to the series was released on December 2nd, 2019.

The plot starts by mainly following two opposing countries; Poland and the Soviet Union. The first few episodes focus on the buildup to World War II, in which the latter plans to invade the former. After the war, the series is mainly based around tensions between the capitalist North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the communist Communist Europe alliances, which get involved in several wars. Towards the end of the first season, the plot focused on the rapid rise of the Union of Balkan Socialist Republics and Islamia, which became the two main antagonists of the series.

Prologue

The series begins in 1939 with Poland, with the help of France and Britain, stopping an invasion of their country by the Third Reich. The three countries, with the help of a Czech Republic rebellion, then invade the Reich and force them to surrender. A longer version of this prologue was released as a videomapping video here.

The Plan Against Poland

At the start of the series, 4 alliances exist in Europe. These alliances are the Little Entente, the Polish-Romanian Alliance, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and the Pact of Steel. The latter two are both dissolved by 1941. The Soviet Union, one of the two main characters, invades and annexes Finland before planning a joint invasion of Poland with Lithuania. The communist influence in Europe continues when Spain is taken over by communists. However, Finland rebels and regains independence from the Soviet Union. Spain and a now-united Czechoslovakia join the Soviet Union's planned invasion of Poland soon after. Another rising power, Fascist Italy, expands their Libyan colony into western Egypt, and the Empire of Japan establishes a colony in eastern Egypt, expanding into Israel and Jordan a year after. The two countries later form an alliance called the Mediterranean Pact. In 1946, Greece is taken over by communists and joins the Communist Europe alliance with the Soviet Union and Spain. The alliance now plans to not only invade Poland, but also Albania, Bulgaria and Portugal. Another alliance, called the Vienna Pact, is formed between Austria and Hungary. The Soviet Union invades and annexes Estonia and Latvia, and they and their allies prepare for the incoming war.

The Second World War

In 1950, the Soviet Union, Lithuania, Czechoslovakia, Greece and Spain declare war on Poland, Bulgaria, Albania and Portugal. This marks the beginning of World War II. Romania joins Poland's side of the war and Turkey and the Mediterannean Pact join the Soviet Union's side of the war. France joins the war as a third side to expand their African and Arabian colonies. Poland is steamrolled by the Soviet Union, Lithuania and Czechoslovakia but the latter two pull out of the war before Poland is fully invaded. Albania/Bulgaria and Portugal are fully invaded by Greece and Spain respectively. French Syria is fully invaded by Japan in the south and Turkey in the north. France makes advancements into northern Italy, but Italy makes advancements into French North Africa. The war ends in 1953 when Poland is fully invaded by the Soviet Union. The Treaty of Athens is signed between all parties of the war. In this treaty:

Spain annexes Portugal.
Greece annexes Albania and southern Bulgaria.
Syria is divided between Japan and Turkey.
Most of Poland's territory is divided between Lithuania, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union.
The Soviet Union annexes Moldova from Romania.
France annexes northeastern Italy up to the city of Milan.
Italy annexes the eastern portion of French North Africa.

Post-War Alliances

After the war, the Polish-Romanian alliance is dissolved. Poland instead joins the Vienna Pact as well as forming a new alliance with Germany called the Central European Pact. An alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is formed between America, Britain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania and Hungary. This alliance was established primarily to combat Communist Europe. In 1958, Greece invades Yugoslavia and annexes much of their southern territory, renaming itself to the Union of Balkan Socialist Republics (UBSR). In 1962, the Vienna Pact and Germany declare war on Czechoslovakia, resulting in the latter losing most of its territory and the Little Entente being dissolved. The Mediterranean Pact is dissolved too, while NATO and the Central European Pact get larger. In 1965, Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union for the previous 41 years, dies. A new leader, who is Polish and sympathetic to Poland, is appointed the following year. In the same year, the UBSR annexes almost all of Yugoslavia, becoming stronger. Japan and Italy give independence to all their African and Arabian colonies, with the exception of Italian Tunisia. The Vienna Pact and Central European Pact merge into a single alliance called the European Union (EU). Unlike its predecessors, the EU is also an economic alliance.

NATO-Communist Tensions

Tensions between America and the Soviet Union increase as a 'Space Race' begins between them as both try to achieve space travel milestones before each other. In 1967 and 1974, America launches two manned missions to the moon, but both fail. The Soviet Union becomes the first country to land men on the moon in 1975. Spain leaves Communist Europe in 1967 due to rebellions in Catalonia and Portugal, and both regions gain independence soon after. An alliance between Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Libya and Algeria is formed in 1974 called the League of Arab States. The EU continues to grow, going from 4 members in 1970 to 8 in 1976. Tensions between NATO and the UBSR come to a head in 1977 when the Cyprus World War breaks out.

The Cyprus World War

The Cyprus World War begins when Iraq and Syria declare war on Turkey. The UBSR declares war on Turkey, which prompts the rest of NATO to declare war on the UBSR, Iraq, Syria and the Kurdish rebels inside Turkey. The war goes badly for NATO, as the American military is blocked from crossing the Atlantic by the UBSR. The war ends in 1978 when Turkey surrenders. The Treaty of Istanbul is signed by all sides of the war. In this treaty, the UBSR and their Bulgarian puppet annex western Turkey up to the city of Istanbul, Syria annexes parts of southern Turkey, Kurdistan gains independence and the UBSR annexes Cyprus. One year later, the UBSR expands even further by invading and annexing southern Italy.

The Rise of the Two Powers

In 1980, Saudi Arabia and Iraq are overthrown by a group named ISIS, who take full control of their territory. This causes the UBSR to dissolve Communist Europe, instead forming an alliance with ISIS called the Destruction Pact, which is renamed the Alliance of Two Powers soon after as ISIS renames themselves to Islamia. The EU expands further as Britain, France and Italy all join. In 1985, Syria and Jordan join Islamia and in that same year the Alliance of Two Powers begin planning for a future war.

The Fall of Communism

After tensions between America and the Soviet Union rise to an all-time high, World War III begins in 1990 after America and NATO (as well as China and Sweden) declare war on the Soviet Union. While the Soviet Union falls and is dissolved, the UBSR makes large gains in the war. This troubles America and some other nations, who plan to fund revolts inside the UBSR. America sends its military to Europe and the UBSR erupts into civil war in 1998, dissolving in the following year. Europe enters a new millennium free of communism and more and more countries begin working cooperatively. By 2020, it had been 21 years since the last European war.
