Austria, officially the Kingdom of Austria, is a nation and one of the main protagonists of Federation Mapper's series Three Worlds. After being an integral part of the Holy Roman Empire for centuries, Austria first formed its own empire, the Austrian Empire, in 1804 which became Austria-Hungary in 1867. After the fall of Austria-Hungary after World War I, Austria was reduced to a small, insignificant nation. In 1938, Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany but was given independence by the New German Reich after the end of World War II. Austria formed the New Axis with Germany and France in 1955 and as a result expanded its territory back into the Balkans in the late 1950s. Austria remained a close ally of Germany's until it collapsed during World War III after being nuked by the Soviet Union. It wasn't until 2004, 33 years after the end of the war, that Austria was reformed.

History[]

1804-1938: Background[]

Modern Austria was first formed as the Austrian Empire in 1804 during the Napoleonic Wars. During its existence, it encountered several ethnic uprisings including a major rebellion from the rthnic Hungarians in 1848, which led to a compromise in 1867 that turned the Austrian Empire into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Despite the changes, the empire would continue to face a lot of ethnic unrest and ultimately, after World War I, the empire was dissolved into several smaller nations, one of which being Austria, which was now much smaller and weaker than its former self. In 1938, Austria was annexed by Germany, which was now under the rule of the Nazis.

1944-1969: Resurgence[]

However, the Treaty of Innsbruck after World War II and the creation of the New German Reich saw Austria revived under Habsburg rule again. Austria immediately developed close ties with Germany, and the two nations helped rebuild each other's economy and military. In 1955, Austria, Germany and France formed the New Axis together. This new alliance was able to invade and conquer Italy, Spain and Croatia, which resulted in Austria gaining a lot of territory. Austria also gained territory in the war against the Soviet Union in 1959.

1969: Death[]

In 1969, World War III was going on and the Soviet Union was facing much of continental Europe under the leadership of Germany. Austria, along with Romania, launched Operation Jupiter, an invasion of the Soviet Union through Turkey and the Balkans. The Soviets, fearing the fall of Turkey would open a door to its Caucasus oil fields, decided to drop a nuclear bomb at the heart of Austria, nuking Switzerland as well in the process. Austria collapsed immediately, ending 25 years of Habsburg rule. While this did crush German morale, it was not enough to prevent the Germans from winning the war two years later.

2004+: Return[]

After the war ended, Germany cleaned up all the nuclear-affected places in Europe, with operations finally being completed in 2004. Seemingly out of nowhere, Austria, along with Switzerland, was re-established with the Habsburgs in power once again.

Personality and Relationships[]

Austria's character is usually the one that helps to calm other characters down, for example their conversation with Germany before World War III. This likely stems from Austria's extensive military history and experience in combat.

Germany[]

Germany is Austria's 'brother', and the country that made the decision to reform Austria in 1944. The two nations remained very close for the duration of the series. When Austria collapsed during World War III, German morale was so low that Erwin Rommel suffered from depression. After the war, there was a strong movement in Germany to reform Austria, which came into fruition in 2004 when Austria did indeed reform.

Switzerland[]

Austria and Switzerland fought together in the war against fascism and managed to defeat the enemy together. The two nations were destroyed together by Soviet nukes, and they were also reincarnated together in 2004.
